About me
About meAbout me

Welcome to the website of Andreas Bergen, or Andi for short. I am a graduate student completing my Masters degree in Computer Science at the University of Victoria. I am located on west coast of Canada in the beautiful city of Victoria, British Columbia.

I work under the supervision of Yvonne Coady in the ModSquad lab. Our lab focusses mostly on the areas of: Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, and Virtualization.

My personal research work has involved kernel modules, distributed information exchange architechtures and designs, as well as performance evaluation of distributed storage systems.

After I completed a double major in Political Science and History and graduated with distinction with a BA., I went on to pursue a BSc. in computer science (and I graduated with that too :-)). Originally, I planned to become a lawyer, but ultimately I am extremely glad to have found my passion in the field of computer science. Of course, it is always good to know that law school was, is, and always will be an alternative. But now I am firmly established an happy in computer science and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Personally, I embrace an active lifestyle. Exercise and healthy nutrition are very important to me. After all, they say a healthy mind lives in a healthy body.

I enjoy activities like hiking/climbing, tennis, martial arts (currently a brown belt in Japanese Jujitsu and a blue belt (1 stripe) in Brazilian Jiujitsu) and swimming.

Recently, I was introduced to squash. It is quite the fun game ... if you enjoy running and occasionally crashing into walls as you learn the sport.

Any outdoor activity is generally welcome and I will give it a try (or more than 1 try :) ). I also enjoy diving (scuba), paintball and soccer.

With all these activities, I manage to spend most of my day in front of a computer screen to work on research or academic tasks (if you work hard, you are allowed to play hard too :-) ).

The goal of this website is to give you some idea of some of the projects and activities that I get myself involved in while persuing a Masters degree in computer science at the University of Victoria.

This site is intentionally very simple and not overly flashy (or flashy at all for that matter). I am a systems and networks guy (as others like to call it) and let's face it: Who needs a GUI and shiny graphics if you have access to a terminal?

To find out more, visit my linedin page, neither this page nor linked in contains everything there is to know about me as a person and a professional.

Thank you for your time.
